Naval,Biliran (30 November) Ã¢â‚¬â€œ In the recently conducted presentation of the results of the 2006 Biliran Adolescent Sexuality and Reproductive Health Baseline Survey (BASRHBS), it shows that more than 30% of the young male population are engaged in premarital sex which is higher compared to a little over 20% of the young female population in the province of Biliran.
The 2006 BASRHBS is a study conducted by Josefina V. Cabigon, Ph.D. and Marieta B. Sumagaysay, Ph.D. of the Demographic Research and Development Foundation, Incorporated (DRDFI), University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) and the University of the Philippines Tacloban College(UPTC) respectively.
The objective of the study is to establish profile/situation of the youth population aged 15-24 years old, to determine the prevailing Adolescent Reproductive and Sexuality Heakth (ARSH) issues and concerns confronting the youth, determine the kind of information and services needed by the youth, determine and assess the existing ARSH programs, projects and organizations in the Local Government Units (LGUs), identify factors affecting accessibility and recommend needed interventions and programs.
Based on the survey, 31.6% of the young male population are engaged in premarital sex while 24.2% of the young female population in Biliran province are into it. The survey also shows that 75.8% of the young female population while 68.4% of the young male population said they are not engaged in premarital sex.
Based on the distribution of premarital sex experience by municipality and by gender, the municipality of Cabucgayan has the highest percentage with 37.5% of the young female population and only 7.3% of the young male population are engaged in premarital sex.
This was closely followed by Naval with 36.6% of the young female population and 36.1% of the young male population, Kawayan Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 34.2% of the male and 23.9% of the female, Almeria Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 34% male and 32.6% female, Culaba Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 31.2% male and 27.1% female, Caibiran Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 29.3% male and 25.5% female, Biliran Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 29.2% male and 17.1% feamle and Maripipi Ã¢â‚¬â€œ 20.6% male and 11.5% female are engaged in premarital sex..
What is more revealing is that 89.7% of the married male/living together are engaged in premarital sex while 77.6% of the married female/living together are also into it in the province of Biliran. Of the female population who are not married, the survey shows 6.8% are engaged in premarital sex while 27.3% of the unmarried male population are engaged in premarital sex
In the percentage distribution of premarital sex experience by age and gender, the male population aged 20-24 years old posted 58.6% and 42.7% of the female population of the same age bracket. In the 15-19 years old bracket, the male population posted 18.3% and 16.2% for the female population.
In terms of educational attainment of those engaged in premarital sex, the survey posted 53.7% of the female in the elementary level and 30.9% of the male of the same educational level. The male population who belong to college posted 51.1% and 22% of the female. The high school population also shows that 23.5% of the male are engaged in premarital sex while the female population posted 19.7%.
The survey also shows that 32.6% of the male who belong to the catholic religion are engaged in premarital sex and only 24.3% of the female while 25.3% of the non-catholic male are engaged in premarital sex and 16.3% of the famle non-catholic are into it.
