Two tectonic earthquakes shook some parts of the Visayas this morning but did not cause any damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the first quake of magnitude 4.4 hit at 2:21 a.m. and was centered at 59 kilometers southeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.

The tremor, caused by a movement along the Philippine Trench, was felt at Intensity 2 in Borongan, Eastern Samar, it said.

The second quake of the same magnitude, meanwhile, struck at 6:15 a.m., with its epicenter traced at four kilometers southeast of Naval, Biliran Island. Helen Flores

It is time that our own Mt Panamao Volcano should be looked at by Philippine and foreign volcanologist because there has been numerous small earthquakes that preceeded this one. This volcano has been dormant for 338 years since it first violently erupted in 1669. It is slowly waking up from its deep slumber. The weekly shakings should be a sign. If people would care to look at the past, the warning signs shouldn’t be ignored. The people of Biliran shouldn’t be complacent about this because it is dangerous. Can we afford to live next to a ticking timebomb? What if it will erupt again? Can we bet our life and family on it? Of course not. We can’t prevent it from exploding but we can make plans to evacuate before it explodes. We don’t want to happen to Biliran Island what happened to Krakatoa in Indonesia in 1883. Thirty-six thousand (36,000) people died due to this cataclysmic explosion. Thousands more were injured. If the explosion won’t do us in, can we escape the pyroclastic flows and tsunamis that would soon follow? Think you can outrun it? I don’t think so. Remember Pompeii? To be safe, Mt Panamao volcano needs to be checked. It is about time.

Krakatoa or Krakatau or Krakatao is a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. It has erupted repeatedly, massively, and with disastrous consequences throughout recorded history. The best known eruption culminated in a series of massive explosions on August 26-27 1883.
The 1883 eruption ejected more than 25 cubic kilometres of rock, ash, and pumice [2], and generated the loudest sound historically reported: the cataclysmic explosion was distinctly heard as far away as Perth in Australia approx. 1,930 miles (3,110 km), and the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius approx. 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Near Krakatoa, according to official records, 165 villages and towns were destroyed and 132 seriously damaged, at least 36,417 (official toll) people died, and many thousands were injured by the eruption, mostly from the tsunamis which followed the explosion.
The eruption destroyed two thirds of the island of Krakatoa. Eruptions at the volcano since 1927 have built a new island in the same location, called Anak Krakatau (child of Krakatoa).

Asa man ang tawo motago?

    Pepr

Thank you for the information. Thank you so much for making us aware about Mt. Panamao. Personally i am concerned with the frequent earthquakes and even the Ipoipo – that struck Naval.

Yes i have seen the ruins of Pompei and it is really sad the devastation made by Mt. Vesuvius . I have seen what a beautiful place gone to waste, people covered by ashes.

Even the experience of Mt Pinatubo by some of our countrymen should also make us Navalians aware of the dangers caused by a volcano eruption.

I have discussed with Boy Alabarca if we can do some research and inform Phivocs about Biliran – so that the Biliranons will be aware.

    Thanks.

  • 10. ams  |  October 31st, 2007 at 12:28 pm

I am concerned when my sisiter told me that another earthquake struck in Naval early sunday morning.

I told her to inform Mayor Susan to have the volcano checked so that we will know why there is frequent mini earthquakes in Naval.

    thank to all of you!!!!

  • 11. biliran bridge  |  October 31st, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Hey, don’t forget me for a visit by those engineers.

Whenever there’s a quake, it affects me – my structural integrity.

I feel bad for you folks if I am out – you know what I mean. If it happens(yeah, bridge falling down) in Japan and America, it could happen here too. God forbids!
So those government engineers, please do some work
    to avoid surprises.

So please take a look at me please closely and carefully.

    Thanks.

    To All Biliranon;

You don’t need to panic like that. It’s not too seriours. The “Hinungaw” is just showing that the heat was going up slowly. Observed the Behavior of animals around the Volcano if they got panic. They are not. Means nothing to worry that much.

    JDR….

LOOK WHAT YOU DONE……. YOU MAKE PEOPLE THINK ITS TOO DANGEROUS FOR THEM TO LIVE IN THIS ISLAND. MAYBE YOU JUST TRYING TO SCARED SOME BILIRANON SO THAT THEY WILL GOING TO LEAVE HERE AND BRING HERE YOU WHOLE FRIENDS & PEOPLE.

CAREFUL AND WATCH YOUR MOUTH…..YOU NEED TO OBSERVE RIGHT FIRST BEFORE SAYING THOSE THINGS. ARE YOU TALKING WITH OUR GOD?

Talking about volcanoes, here’s the latest from Krakatoa…

Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano spews lava, red-hot rocks
    Posted : Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:23:02 GMT

Jakarta – Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano spewed smoke and flaming rocks hundreds of metres from its crater Wednesday although it was not in danger of erupting, an official said. Anton – a government vulcanologist at a monitoring post near the volcano, which lies in the Sunda Strait between the Java and Sumatra islands – said its volcanic activity continued to fluctuate.
Anton, who like many Indonesians uses one name, said that since Tuesday evening, a river of lava and red-hot rocks had been sliding down the slopes as far as 400 metres from Anak Krakatoa’s crater.
Despite scientists’ estimations that the volcano was not especially dangerous at present, Anton warned fishermen and visitors to stay beyond a 3-kilometre radius from the mountain because it would continue to rumble for some time.
The volcano’s sudden eruption in June 1994 killed one US tourist and injured three Britons and two Indonesians.
Anak Krakatau, which means “Child of Krakatau,” formed in the Sunda Strait after the legendary eruption and explosion of Mount Krakatau in 1883, which triggered tsunamis and killed more than 36,000 people in what was then Dutch-controlled Indonesia. The eruption was among the largest ever recorded, and Anak Krakatau was born in its aftermath.
The younger volcano rumbled to life nearly three weeks ago and has since been dazzling scientists and visitors with its pyrotechnics.
Meanwhile, vulcanologists warned residents living on the slopes of the rumbling Mount Kelud volcano in East Java province to keep their distance as it continued to spew hot ash and lava.
On November 8, scientists downgraded Kelud’s status to alert level three after it appeared the volcano was experiencing only a slow eruption and a powerful explosion was unlikely. Authorities have also allowed thousands of residents to return to their homes on the volcano’s slopes after they were forced to evacuate to emergency shelters for more than three weeks.
However, Kelud’s activity remained high, scientist Agus Budianto said, explaining that tremors were continuing and a lava dome, created by lava oozing through cracks, had emerged from the crater like an “island” and was continuing to expand.
“Lava is constantly shooting out of the crater,” Budianto said from a nearby monitoring post. “We recommend people keep their distance.”
Budianto said closed-circuit television showed that the newly emerging lava dome was now up to 200 metres in diameter and stood 140 metres above the surface of the lava lake.
He said clouds of smoke billowed up to 2,500 metres into the air Wednesday morning and ash covered a number of villages as far as 15 kilometres from the volcano’s crater.
Indonesia has the highest density of volcanoes in the world, with about 500 along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” where seismic and volcanic activity is common. Nearly 130 are active and 65 are listed as dangerous.

hope pipol in biliran have unity they will not quarel for the position in the government coz its nonsence to posses that kind of attitude our place will not be uplift in the problems that we are facing today we shoulh have peace accept what we got and be contented of it remember as of no there is perfect polititian in our country, its not easy to find for a perfect one and its possible to happend we should unite for the own good s our province and the improvement o it instead of doing nothing lets promote our tourism and make it blom coz this can help promoting our place into a good tourist spot and so that we can help pipol hu dont have income, thru dis thing its a big help for them if they will have a daily source of their life

  • 38. joseph suarez  |  November 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

While it is true that we should unite, but first we must separate the rotten one or else we will all be rotten too. While it is true that there are no perfect politician for there are no perfect person in this world, there are still better person with genuine intension for uplifting the life and place we live morally and spiritually. And we should continue finding them or else we all be lost. The late Gov Danilo Parilla adopted the saying, “the only reason for the evil (like jhun del rosario and pawiks ) to triumph is for good people to do nothing”.

TO ALL BILIRANONS: PLEASE HEED THE EARTHQUAKES SERIOUSLY, YOUR COMPLACENCY MIGHT BE YOUR DOWNFALL, GOD FORBID! ALL OF YOU ARE IGNORANT OF THE DANGER! ANYONE WITH COMMON SENSE KNOWS THAT MORE FREQUENT EARTHQUAKES MEAN THAT THE VOLCANO IS WAKING FROM ITS SLUMBER. YOU DON’T NEED A GENIUS TO TELL YOU THAT! Has any of one besides me watched DISCOVERY CHANNEL the previous month when they featured “BEHIND THE NEWS: KRAKATOA” which was shown for several days? Or VESUVIUS on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC? MANY SAY THAT FEAR & PANIC IS DUE TO A LACK OF FAITH. BUT IS FAITH & PRAYER ENOUGH TO SAVE US? PRAYER IS USELESS IF NOT COUPLED WITH ACTION. TO OUR GOV’T OFFICIALS: PLEASE HAVE PHILVOLCS SEND OVER VOLCANOLOGISTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO STUDY OUR VOLCANOES, & HAVE THE RESULTS TELEVISED ON ABS-CBN & GMA SO BILIRANONS CAN PREPARE!! HAVE PHILVOLCS BUILD OBSERVATORIES NEAR THE VOLCANOES! MAKE AN EVACUATION PLAN! LISTEN PLEASE BEFORE ITS TOO LATE! THE BILIRANONS WELFARE & SAFETY IS WORTH A MILLION TIMES MORE THAN ANY OF THE TRIVIAL EXCHANGES ON RADIO BETWEEN POLITICIANS & RELIGIOUS LEADERS! Will RADYO NATIN PLEASE FORBID POLITICIANS FROM WASHING THEIR LAUNDRY ON THE AIR, & WILL RELIGIOUS OF DIFFERENT FAITHS STOP COMPETING & ATTACKING EACH OTHER SO THEY CAN FOCUS ON MORE IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE SAVING BILIRANONS FROM NATURAL DISASTERS? I CHALLENGE ANYONE WHO DOESN’T KNOW WHEN TO SHUT UP, & START THINKING! I’m sick of listening to nonsense! Thanks! :-w:-w:-w:-w:-w:((:((:((:((:((:(( Contact me at 09174358369. I had a nightmare last night. My dream was about Biliran.
There was an earthquake and the whole island sank to the
bottom of the ocean. I saw the Phil map, the Visayas were dotted with many small islands and the islands disappeared. What remain were the big island of Luzon and Mindanao. That was so scary!

    TO MY FELLOW BILIRANONS:

RECENTLY, I HAVE BEEN SWARMED BY A NUMBER OF TEXT MESSAGES INQUIRING WHETHER OR NOT OUR VOLCANO IN BILIRAN IS GOING TO ERUPT BECAUSE OF THE FREQUENT QUAKES. AS I SEE IT IN THEIR TEXTS, PANIC IS BEGINNING TO SWEEP IN THE UPLAND AREAS.

SOME OF THE TEXTS POINTED TO RADYO NATIN AS THE SOURCE AND JDR BECAUSE OF HIS ‘PREDICTIONS’ SOMETIME AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE ABOUT EVENTS LIKE THIS. I THINK DEL ROSARIO SHOULD HAVE WEIGHED THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS PRONOUNCEMENTS BEFORE UTTERING THEM BECAUSE AN IRRESPONSIBLE STATEMENT LIKE THAT, SPEAKING ABOUT DISASTERS RIGHT AFTER A STRONG EARTHQUAKE IS BOUND TO BE MISUNDERSTOOD BY THE ORDINARY FOLKS ESPECIALLY UP IN THE MOUNTAINS WHERE THE COMMUNICATION CHANNEL IS BOUND TO GET DISTORTED. THIS DISTORTED NEWS IS NOT GOOD FOR OUR PEOPLE AS MUCH AS IT IS NO GOOD IF WE HOLD BACK THE TRUTH. WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY IS WE BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO AVOID PANIC BY OUR PEOPLE.

DEL ROSARIO MUST HAVE REALIZED HOW STUPID IT IS FOR A PUBLIC OFFICIAL TO MAKE DIRE ‘PREDICTIONS’ OVER THE RADIO THAT IS BOUND TO BE MISUNDERSTOOD AND WILL CAUSE A LOT OF UNDUE SUFFERING OF THE PEOPLE.

I ALREADY CONTACTED PHIVOLCS TUESDAY LAST WEEK AND REQUESTED THAT AN EXECUTIVE BRIEFING BE GIVEN OUR LOCAL EXECUTIVES ON THE SEISMIC ACTIVITIES GOING ON, BE IT VOLCANIC OR TECTONIC IN ORIGIN. THEY PROMISED TO SEND A REPRESENTATIVE TO BILIRAN.

JUST THIS AFTERNOON, MY STAFF AGAIN CALLED UP PHIVOLCS AND INFORMED THEM OF THE SITUATION IN BILIRAN. THEY PROMISED TO SEND MEN AND EQUIPMENT TO MONITOR BILIRAN NEXT WEEK.

I WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOWUP ON THIS SO WE CAN GET OUR GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE EXPERT OPINION AND ADVICE. I BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO GET HARD DATA FIRST BEFORE MAKING ‘PREDICTIONS’ AS IF WE HAVE BEEN DIVINELY BLESSED OVERNIGHT TO GET THE ABILITY TO SEE THE FUTURE IN WAYS THAT ARE NOT ORDINARILY GRANTED NORMAL ORDINARY BEINGS.

IM CALLING ON ALL OUR PEOPLE TO REMAIN CALM AND NEVER EVER PANIC. PANIC IS OUR GREATEST ENEMY AND WILL NORMALLY CAUSE MORE DEATHS THAN THE CAUSE ITSELF.

BY THE WAY, THERE IS FIRE IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. WE HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO EVACUATE. I WILL COME BACK AGAIN TOMORROW. THANKS

I agree with Jason. It’s not a good idea for politicians to bicker about the earthquakes, who’s right or wrong. The safety of the entire community doesn’t depend on the politicians. The safety of the people will depend on each individual’s preparation in the face of perceived calamity. The politicians can’t guarantee the safety of the people. What the people can do is to take responsibility for their own safety. Biliran is not a nanny state. It is poor. It doesn’t have enough resources to feed the poor let alone take care about the welfare of its citizen in times of disaster. It is a good idea to have a plan for mass evacuation or some type of safe-houses or shelters. If there is going to be a big typhoon, the NIT & Naval Gym are good sites for protection against the weather. There should be groups assigned to give out food, water, or medicines. We don’t want to be like another Katrina, where many people died because they did not heed the evacuation advise because they depended so much in the government to take care of them, but the need was too much for any government to handle that the people were left to their own devices. There was mass chaos, killings, and lootings. Many people drowned and their bloated bodies were on the streets or sometimes inside their homes. It was a big mess, at least, the survivors had a place of refuge in the forms of shelters.

As for earthquakes that plague Biliran island, there is no place to hide. The frequent quakes are signs that shouldn’t be ignored. It is good to have information out there so people can make preparation. Like they always said, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I believe we should not talk or discuss regarding the volcano eruption. Not until there is a confirmation from the people who have more knowledge regarding this matter like the PHIVOLCS. And they are responsible enough to take action on this matter the soonest possible.
