Review Dau An Viet Nam Tren Bien Dong Book At around 270,000 words, Stanley Karnow's Vietnam - A History is something of a beast, as is its subject. Even those who did not survive through the age when studies of the struggle dominated many international media, the concept itself remains probably accepted as something famous, something that sums up the third quarter of the twentieth century. The phrase famous could be inaccurate, nevertheless. Icons are small images that suggest something larger. Vietnam, as a topic, as a reality, was usually a huge problem. It had been properly included the world, toppled US Presidents, believed unknown thousands of lives and fought over for thirty years. This is superpower conflict by proxy.

Stanley Karnow's book is replete with detail, analysis, fact, some fiction and much posturing. It benefits from being written mainly from experience. The writer was the war was covered by a respected journalist who at its height and his encounters with political elites, victims and combatants carry the story of destruction and death alive, when that phrase is not in bad taste. This is no small skirmish, restricted to a far corner of the North American world view. World War Two devastated Europe and significant other parts of the world. And yet a greater tonnage of explosives was dropped in the Vietnam War than in every the Next World War's theatres of conflict mixed. It's worth having a time to think on that. In addition, chemical guns, defoliants and napalm were dispersed around with apparent abandon prior to the Usa, defeated, left because of their territorially unchanged, unattacked home. There are people who believed the war was counter-productive. There were those who still think that the war was fought by a USA that had one hand tied behind its straight back. An all-out onslaught could have brought important victory. But, given the above mentioned, what can that success have appeared as if? Precisely how close did the world come to another nuclear war?

We are reminded by stanley Karnow how truth becomes a victim. That he describes how US authorities, military and civilian alike dared perhaps not communicate negative messages or perceptions concerning the war. To take action was viewed as defeatism and there were no offers for defeatists, no opportunities for pessimists, their jobs being interpreted as merely unpatriotic. In comparison, positive stories were rewarded, even when they bore little resemblance to reality. And the author's portrait of Walt Rostow, a distinguished person in LBJ's group, casts him straight in the part of anti-communist hawk, a guise in which we must view him when currently we approach his still respectable work with economic change and growth. But what's perhaps most troubling was the simplicity with which those in power used the mechanisms of their state to hound dissenters, to tap their phones, prevent their careers. And, it has to be remembered, this culture did cause - though perhaps indirectly - to the near impeachment and actual removal from office of an elected US President. Stanley Karnow's book captures the conflict ideologically, historically and politically. Along with Gabriel Kolko's book on the same subject, it should really be required reading for anyone left in the world who thinks that war can solve conflict. Read more at here
