Biliran is an island province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region.  It is one of the country’s smallest and newest provinces.  Biliran was previously a sub-province of Leyte.  It became an independent province in 1992.

The diversion road in Biliran could cut 1 km distance, but it cut across rice fields.

Biliran District Engineering Office is still on the process of negotiating the landowner for the acquisition of the Road-Right-of-Way (RROW) since the owner is asking price higher than the DPWH’s offer. The office has coordinated with Local Government Unit (LGUs) in Biliran and stakeholders to settle the problem. As of March 31, 2017, it has an accomplishment of 60%. According to Engr. David P. Adongay Jr., District Engineer, this project is target to finish on July, 2017 along with other 2016 Carry-over projects which is the Construction of Slope Protection along Biliran Circumferential Road and Repair of Banlas Bridge at Maripipi. – DPWH-Biliran DEO

BILIRAN BRIDGE. Linking Geographies, peoples, cultures, tradition and modernity.

Biliran Bridge

BILIRAN BRIDGE. Linking Geographies, peoples, cultures, tradition and modernity.

The Biliran Bridge, constructed during the Marcos presidency, is the only access by land of the entire island-province to the island of Leyte, and practically, of the entire Philippines.

Completed around 1975, this bridge is about 150 meters long and its central span, held in place by an arched steel structure, hovers above a short and narrow channel of water measuring about 40 meters wide at low tide.

When facing north from my favorite spot, one can view Carigara Bay to the right and the Biliran Strait to the left. From this vantage point, the wind almost invariably blows from the east, from the direction of the Carigara Bay.

During stormy weather in the olden days, outrigger boats sailing along the strait would have to wait for the wind and the sea to calm down before attempting to pass through the narrow channel to the bay, where the waves were bigger and more dangerous to seacraft.
