Naval, Biliran (16 August) — The looming crisis on oil and energy is already felt by the Filipino masses as evidenced by the weekly increase in the price of oil. As the increase will most likely affect the energy production and consumption, the Arroyo administration calls for all political leaders in the country to find solutions and help solve the crisis at hand.
Crude oil price rose to P67.10 a barrel as of Friday, up at least by 60 percent since August 2004, prompting oil firms in the country to jack-up the prices of their gasoline, diesel and kerosene by 50 centavos a liter as of Friday August 13, 2005.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), it is expected that the prices of gasoline products will increase up to P3.00 per liter in the coming months due to the upward trend in global price of oil.
With the impending oil and energy crisis in the country, the Arroyo administration appeals to the public to cut down their energy consumption – from the electricity that lights and cools their offices and homes to the fuels that runs their cars and buses.
Likewise, DOE urged the use of alternative fuel like the coco-biodiesel in automobiles which not only minimizes the consumption of gasoline but also contains an environment-friendly component.
However, in order that concrete actions can be used to cushion the impact of the looming oil and energy crisis to the Filipino masses, the Arroyo administration challenged the leaders of this nation whether they are for the administration or in the opposition to stand up and be counted in the face of this looming energy crisis.
Presidential Spokesperson Ignacio Bunye in a statement boldly challenged politicians to show rue statesmanship since it works wonders for the welfare of the people.
Press Secretary Bunye further stated that our leaders must set aside partisanship for the time being and help the people thresh out collective solutions to the crisis.
Secretary Bunye’s pronouncement depicts the political situation in our country where the continuous political bickering of politicians especially the “poisonous utterances” coming from the opposition camp are always the headline of the day and that directly affects the plight of the Filipino masses.
Sec. Bunye reiterates what many sectors and groups in the society are calling for, unity, not division in order to hurdle the crisis that the country is facing at present.
Meanwhile, as prices of gasoline products increases almost weekly, people in the province of Biliran are in unison to just tighten their belts in order to cope up with the effects of the increase.
On the other hand, Local Chief Executives (LCEs) in the province of Biliran are already preparing contingency plans and preventive actions in order that their respective constituency will not greatly be affected. (PIA-Biliran)
