2 quakes hit parts of Visayas

Sunday, October 28, 2007 07:40 PM

Two tectonic earthquakes shook some parts of the Visayas this morning but did not cause any damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the first quake of magnitude 4.4 hit at 2:21 a.m. and was centered at 59 kilometers southeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.

The tremor, caused by a movement along the Philippine Trench, was felt at Intensity 2 in Borongan, Eastern Samar, it said.

The second quake of the same magnitude, meanwhile, struck at 6:15 a.m., with its epicenter traced at four kilometers southeast of Naval, Biliran Island. Helen Flores

  1. I agree with Jason. It’s not a good idea for politicians to bicker about the earthquakes, who’s right or wrong. The safety of the entire community doesn’t depend on the politicians. The safety of the people will depend on each individual’s preparation in the face of perceived calamity. The politicians can’t guarantee the safety of the people. What the people can do is to take responsibility for their own safety. Biliran is not a nanny state. It is poor. It doesn’t have enough resources to feed the poor let alone take care about the welfare of its citizen in times of disaster. It is a good idea to have a plan for mass evacuation or some type of safe-houses or shelters. If there is going to be a big typhoon, the NIT & Naval Gym are good sites for protection against the weather. There should be groups assigned to give out food, water, or medicines. We don’t want to be like another Katrina, where many people died because they did not heed the evacuation advise because they depended so much in the government to take care of them, but the need was too much for any government to handle that the people were left to their own devices. There was mass chaos, killings, and lootings. Many people drowned and their bloated bodies were on the streets or sometimes inside their homes. It was a big mess, at least, the survivors had a place of refuge in the forms of shelters.

As for earthquakes that plague Biliran island, there is no place to hide. The frequent quakes are signs that shouldn’t be ignored. It is good to have information out there so people can make preparation. Like they always said, it is better to be safe than sorry.

  2. I believe we should not talk or discuss regarding the volcano eruption. Not until there is a confirmation from the people who have more knowledge regarding this matter like the PHIVOLCS. And they are responsible enough to take action on this matter the soonest possible.
