The Provincial Councilor’s League, in cooperation with The Naval Institute of Technology and Tau Gamma Phi presented a concert featuring the nationally-renowned band, Cueshe, and several local bands including Agianan sa Kahayag, Melophobia, PopKorn, Naughty Ka, Fire Exit, and Black Wizard last December 22, 2007 at the Naval Gym.

“We have such great talent” Mrs Roselyn Espina-Paras stressed when asked why they let local bands perform alongside a national band. She added that coming from a musically-inclined family, she personally believed it was best to develop local musical talent.The 6 Local bands that presented before Cueshe competed against each other during the battle of the bands competition held last October at the Naval Gym that she also sponsored.

Region 8 agencies prepare for Pamaskong Handog ng Pangulo caravan in Biliran, Samar

Tacloban City (December 21) — The Region 8 participating agencies in the Pamaskong Handog ng Pangulo Caravan which is scheduled on December 28 in Biliran and Samar, will conduct a coordination meeting on December 26, 2007.

This was learned from DSWD Director Leticia Corillo who said that the meeting will be held at the DSWD Reg 8 Office at 10:00 o’clock in the morning.

More than 30,000 families from six municipalities in Biliran and 10 municipalities of Samar, are the target recipients of the President’s Pamaskong Handog or gift giving activities.

The President instructed the Cabinet to conduct the distribution of packages in Priority 1 and Priority 2 provinces including the National Capital Region.

At each distribution event, all of or majority of the suggested activities will accompany the Caravan. Among the suggested activities are rural electrification through NEA; Water (Presidents Priority Program on Water) through the DPWH and NAPC; Tindahan Natin through the National Food Authority; and TESDA Training Programs. DSWD 8 identifies Handog Pamasko ng Pangulo beneficiaries in Biliran barangays

Tacloban City (December 20) — In connection with the Handog Pamasko ng Pangulo project in Region 8, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Office 8 has already the list of barangays with the corresponding number of beneficiaries in the province of Biliran.

Mr. Orville Berino, the coordinator for the Project informed that the Handog Pamasko ng Pangulo Caravan is tentatively visit the province of Biliran, particularly at Biliran town in the morning of December 28. The same will visit the Province of Samar, particularly at Sta. Rita town at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon on the same day.

Mr. Berino added that the list of the target barangays and the number of beneficiaries, is the output of the workshop of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development officers and Municipal Nutrition Action Officers of the Province of Biliran, held on Wednesday.

The workshop in Samar is being conducted today, Mr. Berino added. He is expecting to receive the output late in the afternoon of Thursday or morning of Friday.

TESDA 8 prepares for “Handog Pamasko ng Pangulo” program

Tacloban City (December 18) — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Regional Office 8 headed by Director Johnny Sabulao Jr. is now in the process of making the last details in preparation for the implementation of the Handog Pamasko ng Pangulo in the Region.

Mr. Eliseo Padagdag of TESDA Region 8 informed the Philippine Information Agency that as part of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s Pamaskong Handog, TESDA 8 is now in the process of identifying qualified constituents of Biliran and Samar provinces who will be granted the Galing Mekaniko Ako and Galing Masahista Ako scholarship vouchers.

Mr. Padagdag said that the President will distribute 75 Galing Mekaniko Ako scholarship vouchers to deserving would be mechanics in Biliran who want to earn a lliving as such. Another 75 Galing Mekaniko vouchers will be distributed to 75 deserving would be mechanics in the province of Samar.

Balik Naval International 2007

In behalf of the organizers of the recently concluded Balik Naval International 2007, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the following individuals who have given the Navalenos an early Christmas present in October 2007. Biliran’s goal: “No more hunger”

NAVAL, Biliran – “Let there be no more hunger in Biliran.”

Although these words from Biliran Governor Rogelio “Roger” J. Espina sounds like a magical wish, the provincial executive’s goal can be achieved through determination, a correct approach, and disciplined consumption, among others.

The most important aspect of the program is conservation.

The province’s program to eradicate hunger includes free food to the poorest of the poor, the jobless, and others whose survival depends on provisions from nature, and everything else that is free.

Espina found it prudent to restore the bounty of fish in inland or freshwater bodies of water like rivers, streams, brooks, and ponds, lakes, and other water impoundments.

When these are available, it would seem that survival methods, especially hunting, would become part of the poor’s food sourcing activities. Continue reading “Biliran’s goal: “No more hunger””
