In fairness to our family and for the information and clarification of everyone, let me humbly clarify certain points of (the Inquirer Visayas) story (Page A19 June 14) titled “Climate of terror in Biliran” by Rolando O. Borrinaga.
I refer particularly to the following:
1. That “Congressman Chong went on air in a special program over Radio Natin and blamed the Espina family, his known partial enemies, for the assault on his father and security escorts.”
Let me add that his father, Mr. Charlie Chong, also blamed us when he was interviewed by Bantay Radio of Cebu that same night of the incident.
2. Mr. Borrinaga also alleged that according to his source, Biliran registered a higher crime rate in 2007 particularly during the fourth quarter of 2007, meaning that prior to the 4th quarter 2007, Biliran was peaceful, practically admitting that during my nine years as congressman and three years as mayor of Naval, the capital town, and during more than eight years of my son as governor of the province, was peaceful. He did not mention that Congressman Glenn Chong took his oath as congressman in June of 2007, or during the second quarter of that year.
3. That “Corpin would be identified later as the suspect in the assassination of Biliran Gov. Danilo Parilla in Cebu City on Sept. 7, 2007. He was carrying an ID Card as employee of the provincial capitol signed by Gov. Rogelio Espina.”
Mr. Borrinaga did not bother to check if Corpin was in fact still an employee of the province when the killing of Parilla happened. If he did, he would have found out that Corpin was no longer an employee of the province as after the Vietnamese incident Corpin was dismissed. It would have been easy for Mr. Borrinaga to check as he is from Naval.
I hope that your good self will give space to this short rejoinder in your Visayas section in furtherance of fairness.
