Naval, Biliran (April 30) — The residents of the municipality of Caibiran and its barangays thanked the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in said municipality for organizing and spearheading the conduct of the Candidates Forum jointly with the Department of the Interior and Local Government in the area on April 27, 2010.
According to Mrs. Betty Rostata, a resident in said municipality and one of the panelists who is also a retired government employee, the activity provided an avenue for the residents especially the voters for the forthcoming May 10, 2010 polls to know in person the candidates who are the future leaders of the town and in the province should the candidates win in the elective positions they are aspiring for.
Likewise, she said, the forum gave the voting population of Caibiran town, a chance to evaluate each candidate through their platforms of government.
Held at the Caibiran Municipal Auditorium, the well-attended Candidates Forum was graced by the candidates for the position of Sangguniang Bayan member, Vice-Mayor, Mayor of Caibiran and at the provincial level, the candidates for Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, Vice-Governor, Governor and Congressman.
In his opening message during the candidates forum, Mr. Deonilo Pantas, Municipal Election Officer of Caibiran, Biliran said that he pursued organizing the forum in his town because the activity will guide the voters in choosing the right candidates to lead the province of Biliran, district and the municipality.
The panel of interviewers during the forum was composed of representatives from the religious sector, PIA, Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Biliran Chapter, students and youth sector, and the academe.
Each provincial candidate was given five minutes to present his programs and platform of government while the municipal candidates were given three minutes each.
For their final statements, both provincial and municipal candidates were given only one minute each.
The no-show candidates during the forum were considered by the organizers to have waived their privilege to join the forum.
The platforms of government of the municipal candidates in Caibiran consisted of concerns like environmental sanitation and protection, preparation of a master plan and land use plan of the town, funding for the improvement of the water system, unity and change of people?s attitude and character, passage of comprehensive tax ordinances, a local government that is pro-employee and stop to all forms of illegal activities among others.
On the other hand, the provincial candidates delivered a variety of platforms of government which according to them will be readily implemented should they get elected in the May 2010 elections.
Gubernatorial candidate Charlie Chan is pushing for the development of eco-tourism on top of his other platforms of government.
Another gubernatorial bet, Charles Chong, father of incumbent Congressman Glenn Chong of the lone district of Biliran, presented a very comprehensive platform of government all for the development and progress of the people of Biliran province should he win in his bid for the May 10 elections.
On the other hand, re-electionist Congressman Glenn Chong presented his 19 platforms of government all geared towards the development and improvement of the lives of every Biliranon. (PIA-Biliran)
