The Biliran Clarion

Let us hold on to our Camelot in Biliran. We have not lost it yet, despite official pronouncements to the contrary. Let us keep the will power, the passion, and the social pressure to keep it within our grasp.

Camelot originally referred to an English castle and court where the legendary King Arthur reigned in the 12th-century. But the name had also been applied to the administration of U.S. Pres. John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s.

However, apart from its known aura, the New World Dictionary defines Camelot as “any time, place, etc., idealized as having excitement, purpose, a high level of culture, etc.” In this sense, our collective experience in Biliran for three years now since 2007, when our people had some relief from a dozen years of dynastic rule, falls under this meaning of the word.

There was general excitement and local pride when Naval returned its town fiesta to its October date in 2007. We had kept the euphoria and the fun since then, and had added new cultural elements to our celebration, though our happiness have been snubbed and not shared by a political family hell bent on keeping us under their thumb and rule.

There was general excitement when a school bus system, now with a fleet of 14 buses, was introduced into our educational system by a progressive, home-grown congressional representative who helped realize our Camelot after 12 years of general neglect and token action by politicians from a migrant household. This feat for our educational feat was complemented by school supplies, bags and uniforms for our elementary school children and legislation for three new high schools in our province.

Over a period of three years, our province witnessed the construction of cemented national roads almost equal in length (30+ kilometers) to similar projects over a period of 12 years under a different dispensation.

Punctuating the local achievements was the conversion of the former Naval Institute of Technology into the Naval State University , a feat that had eluded us for two previous congressional terms.

It looked like our Camelot would sail smoothly despite the May 10 automated election. But it did not turn out that way. We were ambushed, so to speak. Of course, we were aware of a dynasty’s supporters and political machinery at the barangay level, which were kept in line by a combination of token assistance and the sway of hundreds of identified loyalists who are in the “15-30” payroll of the Capitol.

But we were not prepared for the fraud that would steal the people’s mandate during our first automated election. Our congressman has already presented the “tip of the iceberg” of this alleged fraud at the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, a testimony covered live by ANC cable TV network and other mass media facilities. The world is now aware of our predicament, eye-witnessed by hundreds of now-protesters that started massing around the Capitol area as soon as the winners our electoral contest were officially proclaimed last May 13.

A significant “critical mass” of our people has contested the official verdict. One of us had been shot, fortunately not killed, within hours of the proclamation. The next day, we were subjected to enforced hunger and thirst for half a day by a crowd dispersal unit of the Philippine National Police sent in fromTacloban. But our protests continued, and would likely continue for some time now.

We, the aggrieved parties, are seeking a manual recount of the votes to reconcile alleged discrepancies with the digitalized results of the elections. We are confident that the election was “stolen” by some parties, we have presented our evidence, including stray PCOS machines and BGAN transmission equipment, and we want the thievery exposed and our votes counted for all their worth.

Most of all, we would like to hold on to our Camelot, before this converts into a mirage and disappear altogether. And for now, we appear willing to be famined or truncheoned by crowd dispersal cops, or hosed down by fire trucks, for that cause.

We know we shall prevail.

  1. this young brilliant, idyllic, agressive, cong. glenn chong is the only hope of our province.. he do his best for the biliranon. we always here for you…

  2. nag ginamit ka pa og flowery words sir! i voted for cong. chong last 2007 election hoping he would really bring change to our province…but HE failed me…he didn’t stand up on his advocacies…i never expected he did vote buying during the 2007 election but he did…he said no corruption but look at what he has now? i really hope someone with integity would stand up for us biliranons…not someone who would want to make even with jerome in the radio…so disgusting knowing that he is a lawyer & jerome is just nothing! i hope in the 2013 election there will be a dignified lady/gentleman who would bring biliran to peace & prosperity!!!

  3. Nicely written piece…
I hope and pray that truth shall prevail despite some lapses to make that happen.
I know who won the election but I am sad that he was not proclaim as one
I know the real voice of the people but I heared a different tune upon announcement by the COMELEC.
Survey-wise even after the hotly contested err hotly manipulated diay election… People will utter the name of their choice the pro people and pro masa at di puro porma Congressman Glenn.

In my honest opinion dili si Glen ug ang iyang Amahan ang napilde sa eleksyon kundi kitang tanang mga lumad Biliranon NGA ANG PANUYO AND MAKAALINGGAWAS SA DAUTANG PAMILYA NGA DILI TAGA ATO….
GOD SEES THE TRUTH BUT WAITS..

  4. Biliran clarion made my political views broaden…i always secure a copy of it when i was stil in naval, distributed over the counter in the supermarket ownd by the chong. The election that won glen way back was probably had a great influence on ths chronicle… But my querry is that how will we convert our clamor into real change that we are all hoping at…how would we take away ourselves in ths savage curse of the witchcraft…look what happen to us during the election.

  5. very well-said edtorial.me too,i would like to see another term for cong.chong.GERRY BOY AS GOVERNOR!!!???? TSK TSK TSK.

  6. Biliran Clarion editorial staff should listen again to the testimony of outgoing Congressman Glenn Chong. No less than their idol himself who repeatedly referred to the “critical mass” of protesters labeled by the Biliran Clarion’s editorial as the “rampaging mob” in the Congressional hearing of the gripes of the has-beens (or was it an investigation?).

And the Congressman himself might be correct in calling his supporters who are out protesting as the mob considering the evidences he has presented to support his claim of cheating in what he refers to as the “small (which he repeatedly emphasized) political district that is Biliran”. These evidences are: differences in time stamps, discrepancies in the thermal papers used, the long time it took for some precincts to close, the discovery of two PCOS machines in Kawayan. But, these are circumstantial! In no way do they prove that cheating was conducted.

I was a volunteer during the elections in the “small political district that is Biliran”. In the municipality I was assigned to monitor, I have observed that Glenn and his party had a team of lawyers apart from the several watchers in every precinct (at one point, I have observed 8 watchers from Glenn’s camp). That is why I find his accusation of cheating to be improbable given his electoral machinery. For instance, if there were discrepancies between the ERs printed from the PCOS at the precinct level and that which was transmitted, Glenn and his team had a way of knowing. And within a few minutes. But, he never rose in Congress to say that there was a discrepancy between the ERs that he has and the transmitted results.

If there has been cheating, let those who have the evidences come forward. And the full extent of the law should be brought upon to bear on the perpetrators. Otherwise, let us all discerning. If the mayoralty candidates are any indication, Roger and party have won it in all but Naval.

At this point, hard as it may, it is high time for Glenn and party to begin entertaining the fact that there was no cheating and that the people of Biliran did not choose him to be their representative.

  7. BILIRANON 7,

ANG ISSUE DINHI SA USA KA THREAD MAO ANG POSIBILIDAD NGA DUNAY DIGITAL PADDING SA RESULTA, LABINA NGA DUNAY EXTRA PCOS MACHINES UG BGAN TRANSMISSION EQUIPMENT NGA NASARA GIKAN DIDTO SA KAWAYAN. DUNAY EXAMPLE GIHATAG SI REP. CHONG, ANG SA LARRAZABAL BA TO? DAUG SIYA DIDTO UG 102 VOTES BASI SA ELECTION RETURNS, PERO PILDI SIYA UG 13 BOTOS SA NA-TRANSMIT NGADTO SA COMELEC. GIUNSA MAN TO NINYO PAG-MAGIC?

KAMAAYO RA KAAYO UG CELLPHONE SIGNAL SA NAVAL, PERO NGANO NGA 10 RA MAN KA RESULTA ANG GIPAAGI PAG TRANSMIT SA PCOS MACHINES. NGANO NGA ANG 29 KA FLASH CARDS GI MANOMANO NA MAN LANG SA PAG REPORT. HADLOK MO NGA MAGUBA ANG SULIP-IT NGA COMPUTER PROGRAM SA PANGAWAT?

LISOD KATUUHAN NGA MGA 2,000 RA KA BOTOS ANG DAUG NI GLENN SA NAVAL BASI SA IHAP SA COMELEC. MABUKLO MAN NI KUNG MOABOT NA NI SA MANUAL COUNT. MAKITA MAN NI KARON UG KINSAY GI AMAT-AMAT.

  8. Biliranon # 7,

  9. probably the smatmatic and the comelec, forgot to show us how the system really flow.. because it is not juz about shading and inserting of ballots in the machine..

they should have shown us the entire process.. so that we would have know if cheating is really possible..

  10. TOPE LOYOLA 10,

NAGPAKITA ANG MGA BILIRANON NIADTONG MAYO 10 NGA ANDAM KITA NGA MODAWAT SA AUTOMATION ISIP BAG-O NGA PROSESO SA PAGBOTOS.
