Tacloban City (October 25) – Comelec Region 8 Director Nick Mendros informed that voting started as scheduled in all the polling areas in the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte and Biliran, all in Eastern Visayas.
Director Mendros said that the Comelec Regional Office is continuously coordinating with the various Provincial Comelec Supervisors in order to monitor whether or not voting has started.
Meanwhile, Colonel Cleve Taboso, the head of PNP8 Operations and Regional Election Management Assistance Center, informed that voting in 100% of the municipalities in Eastern Samar has started.
Colonel Taboso said that the only town where voting has not started in Northern Samar is at Silvino Lobos which could be reached after 8 hours.
Col. Taboso said that in Samar where the provincial election supervisor has announced the postponement of elections in ten municipalities, Daram town was reported to have started voting on time.
He said that the PNP in the Region is now verifying whether any of the 9 more areas earlier announce has also started voting.
On the other hand, Lt. Col. Noel Vestuir of the 8th Infantry Division informed the Philippine Information Agency that the military in the Region has not only given military escorts in the distribution of election paraphernalia but also provided transportation support to the Comelec for the distribution of the same in hinterland areas of the Region.
Comelec Director Mendros, Col. Taboso and Lt. Col. Vestuir all confirmed that no single election-related incident has been reported in the Region since the start of the election period.
Col. Taboso intimated that what they are anticipating are the incidents after the proclamation of winning candidates. He, however said that they have sent police manpower in the polling centers all over the Region to prevent any untoward incidents.
Generally, the situation in the whole of Eastern Visayas is peaceful and orderly, the three gentlemen said. (PIA 8)
