Naval, Biliran (December 13) – The entire province of Biliran joins with the rest of the provinces nationwide in observing December as Firecrackers Injury Prevention Month.

In order to highlight the observance of the occasion, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Biliran has linded-up various activities to prevent firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices injuries as the entire province celebrates Christmas and New Year revelry.

In a mobile phone interview recently with Dr. Alfonso Veneracion, Provincial Health Officer of Biliran, he informed that part of their activities to raise the awareness of the general public on the hazards brought about by firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices is a radio guesting through PIA’s Kapihan forum dubbed “Kapihan at Pulong-pulong ng Bayan”.

“By proper information dissemination, residents in the province will be kept away from the dangers of losing one’s life, hands or injuring any part of the body and property”, he said.

Furthermore, he said that his office will be closely coordinating with concerned agencies especially the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local government units of the province in monitoring the strict enforcement of the ban on the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers.

Dr. Veneracion, likewise informed that as of now, the PHO of Biliran has started preparing and giving orientation to its medical staff who is in-charge of responding to cases of firecrackers blasting.

“We are now ready with our supply of anti-tetanus medicines for our firecracker victims, if any”, he said.

“ But I hope we will have no victims of firecrackers blasting this year”, he added.

As of now, he informed that his office is continuously distributing information, education and communication materials on the safety tips to keep everyone safe from injuries brought about by firecrackers and other pyrotechnics devices provincewide through the municipal health office of the eight municipalities of Biliran province saying that prevention is always the best option.

He bared that anyone can still be happy in celebrating Christmas and welcome the new year without using firecrackers and other related devices.

“The revelers may use drums, kettles no longer used in the households, torotot, empty cans, basins or anything that creates noise and produce sounds to get the feel of welcoming the New Year”, he said.

With the launching of “Walang Batang Magpaputok” campaign of the DOH urging the local government units to protect children from firecrackers-related injuries by strictly enforcing the ban on the sale, manufacture, purchase and use of firecrackers, Dr. Veneracion said he is expecting that there will be no victims at all this year in Biliran as compared in the previous years.
