NAVAL, Biliran – The local government unit (LGU) of the municipality of Naval finds its influential partner in leading a smoke-free town in the non-government organization – the Biliran Medical Society (BMS).

The Biliran Medical Society supports Naval Municipal Ordinance No. 03-2010 or the Smoke-Free Ordinance of the Municipality of Naval by initiating a two-kilometer fun run for a cause dubbed as “Dagan Kontra Tabako” set on March 20.

In an interview with Dr. Dusman Oliver, Board Member of the BMS and focal person of the Fun Run, during the Kapihan at Pulong-Pulong ng Bayan live over Radyo Natin-Naval , it was learned that the fun run is open to all interested participants with a registration fee of P200 to fund activities in its campaign against smoking.

The on-going registration is accommodating the first 100 registrants for a free fun run T-shirt.

The fun run will start at 8:00 o’clock in the morning on March 20, Sunday, at the vicinity of Naval Cathedral with routes around poblacion Naval and to end at the Naval municipal compound.

Dr. Oliver added that as medical professionals, they have seen the ordeal of many patients fighting chronic and fatal diseases related to smoking.

Though no law or any influential professional can stop a smoker to enjoy his freedom, Dr. Oliver still advised smokers to stop smoking NOW, and those who have not tried smoking never to try the bait for his own good and the benefit of all those around him.

The medical society of Biliran is headed by Dr. Fernando Montejo who is also the municipal health officer of Naval, while the anti-smoking ordinance of Naval was proposed by Sangguniang Bayan Member Gabino Velasquez IV who is also a medical doctor by profession. # (PIA Biliran)
