Bombarded with issues about environmental conservation, the province of Biliran is again facing another mining exploration attempt.
During the Ayagan radio program in DYRN, Vice-Gov. Manuel Montejo announced that the Starrex Mining & Devt. Corp. applied an exploration permit two weeks ago, which will allow the Starrex Mining to undertake exploration activities for mineral resources in Biliran.
Some people claim that mining operations help boost the economy of the province, and the country even, but for most of the Biliranons, Gov. Gerry Boy Espina included, mining is one of the surest way to destroy the environment.
“I will not allow mining operations to happen here in Biliran,” Governor Espina said.
Before the Starrex Mining can freely operate their mining bustle in the province, they have to pass through the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the Bureau of Mines in Tacloban or Manila.
Governor Espina stressed that although he cannot stop the process of exploration to occur, he will ask his allies in Sangguniang Panlalawigan to disapprove the application permit.
