TACLOBAN CITY — Gerardo S. Espina, Sr., head of the influential Espina family in Biliran, has resigned as mayor of Kawayan town due to illness and old age.
“My father, Mayor Gerry, does not want weak health to undermine the municipal administration of Kawayan… He is too old to manage the affairs of the town,” said Biliran Governor Gerardo “Gerry Boy” Espina, Jr.
The mayor, 77, has been suffering from liver cancer since 2010. His three sons are all in the government — Gerardo, Jr., the governor; Rogelio, lone congressman of the province; and Rodolfo, the vice-mayor of Kawayan.
The governor said his brother, Rodolfo, will take over the post of the father. — R. L. Arinto
