NAVAL, Biliran – The municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer (MDRRMO) of this town disclosed in an interview his plans for next year after learning important lessons with the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda on November 8 which hit hardly the Eastern Visayas region.

Raoul C. Villordon, MDRRMO informed that part of the plan of his office is the creation of the barangay disaster assessment team who will do the assessment of the damages on properties right after any calamity hit Naval town.

“This is one important post-calamity component to avoid differences of data to be submitted to concerned government agencies”, Villordon said after learning that conflict arises when differences on data occur.

It was learned that claimants for the totally and partially damaged houses did not coincide with the data submitted to his office which created conflicts in the distribution of relief goods and other assistance extended by the government to typhoon victims.

He also said that among his plans for 2014 is the procurement of two stick trucks which will be used in the evacuation of residents from the barangays to the evacuation centers.

These vehicles will complement other vehicles of the local government unit of Naval in the operation of his office, Villordon added.

He further said that the MDRRMO of Naval will also purchase generator set which is also a very useful equipment in times of disaster.

One priority plan of his office is the orientation of the new set of barangay officials of their role in times of disaster and calamities, he added.

He learned that there are still some incumbent barangay officials who do not know their role in times of disaster and calamities especially in the use of disaster risk reduction and management fund.

He also divulged that the relief operations of the town still continue at present with the arrival of some 400 sacks of relief goods consisting of six food packs per sack from the regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 8 on Monday, November 25.
