NAVAL, Biliran (PIA) – The province of Biliran conducted its earthquake drill at the Biliran Provincial Hospital (BPH) in Naval, Biliran in line with the 1st Quarter Nationwide Earthquake Drill 2014 on Wednesday, March 19.


No less than Dr. Edgar E.Veloso, OIC Provincial Heath Officer of Biliran who is also the Chief of the BPH led the quake drill that started at around 10:00 o’clock in the morning at the BPH parking area.

Aside from the active involvement of the employees and staff of the BPH in the conduct of the earthquake drill, the staff of the Biliran Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) led by Sofronio Dacillo, Jr., Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO); the staff of the Biliran provincial crime laboratory of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) led by PInsp. Darwin A. Morallos; 11 members of the 19th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Kananga ,Leyte led by 1Lt. Jaime Tuguic have also actively participated in the earthquake drill.

Representatives from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) regional office no. 8 were also present during the conduct of the earthquake drill in BPH.

Initially, a 40-second siren sounded off to signal the participants to prepare for the start of the quake drill.

Dacillo informed that the 40-second siren is the timeframe for individuals to prepare what to do, like to duck cover and hold during actual earthquake.

He also said that individuals are advised to leave and evacuate the premises of a building or house and to conduct rescue operations after the 40-second siren when the shaking of the edifice or ground stops.

The Biliran PDDRMO also informed that the earthquake drill for the second quarter this year will be conducted at the Naval State University (NSU) to give knowledge and ideas to students of what to do during earthquakes.

It may be recalled that a 4.9 magnitude quake hit Naval town on July 4, 2012 where employees, medical staff and patients from the BPH scampered outside the hospital building and parking area.

Likewise, residents of Naval town went outside their houses to a safer ground to avoid being hit by falling objects resulting from the earthquake. # (PIA 8 Biliran)
