NAVAL, Biliran- Naval State University, through An Lantugi Debate Society, hosted the first Biliran Schools Debate Championship last February 12-14 at NSU-Main Campus.
“Hosting the first provincial debate tournament is our way of empowering our young people and introducing d culture of debate.We believe this is a great avenue for our participants to develop critical thnking and debate competence,” Mr. Reinhard Bon D. Tan, adviser of the An Lantugi said.
Dubbed as “Word War I Debate Open: Unleash the passion”, the said activity featured seminars, debate tournaments, adjudication and extemporaneous speaking competitions both for secondary and tertiary levels.
176 student-participants from 5 secondary schools in the province and different colleges of d host school attended the 3-day tournament.
Naval School of Fisheries (NSF) Team A composed of Claire Gabisay, Jois Jamil Linao, and Olive Anonar and College of Education (Coed) Team A including Gerah Japson, Albert Rosete, and Bernadette Bernadas were declared champion for the Asian-Parliamentary debate for secondary and tertiary category, respectively. Top 3 winners for extemporaneous speaking includes HYACINTH SHANE BALIÑA(NSU-LHS GRADE 7), CLAIRE GABISAY(NSF GRADE 9), ILAMAE PALCONIT (NSU-LHS GRADE 9) for highscool and GERAH JAPSON (COED 3RD YR), DARIUS DARUNDAY(COED 2ND YR) and ESTERUTH CASTILLO (CAS 1ST YR) for college level.
Meanwhile, the said tournament was organized in partnership with the Department of Education- Division of Biliran, Rotary Club of Biliran, Biliran Electric Cooperative (Bileco), OCCCI, Biliran Provincial Government, University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban Campus Debate Society and the Eastern Visayas Debate Union.
