NAVAL, Biliran (PIA) – With the low performance in the area of nutrition program implementation of some local government units (LGUs) here in Biliran province, the provincial nutrition program coordinator strongly called on the local chief executives (LCEs) to give priority on nutrition program implementation in their respective areas.
“There is an increase in the prevalence of malnutrition in some LGUs in Biliran province in 2015 compared to the data reflected in 2014”, Rio Rosales, Biliran provincial nutrition program coordinator said in an interview.
In the 2015 accomplishment report on nutrition program in Biliran province, it was reflected in the prevalence of malnutrition report that the malnutrition prevalence in the towns of Almeria, Culaba and Biliran town have increased.
The town of Almeria increased by .77% from 9.62% in 2014 to 10.39% in 2015; Culaba by .26% from 14.29 in 2014 to 14.44% in 2015; and Biliran at 1.29% from 18.03 in 2014 to 19.32 in 2015 based on the 2015 report.
Biliran town has the highest prevalence of malnutrition in 2015 followed by Culaba-14.55%; Naval-13.24%; Kawayan-13.13%; Cabucgayan-11.53%; Almeria-10.39%; Maripipi-8.51%; and Caibiran-8.16%.
Five towns have achieved significant improvements in their nutritional status in 2015 based on the 2015 prevalence of malnutrition report like Cabucgayan from 20.07% in 2014 to 11.53 in 2015; Caibiran-9.30% in 2014 to 8.16% in 2015; Kawayan-13.44 in 2014 to 13.13 in 2015; Maripipi-11.31% in 2014 to 8.51% in 2015; and Naval-13.80% in 2014 to 13.24% in 2015.
Caibiran topped the list of municipalities in Biliran province in the effective implemention of nutrition action plan in 2015 with 90.20% followed by Maripipi-with 84.78%; Almeria – 84.22%; Biliran – 77.60%; Naval – 74.78%; Kawayan-73.87%; Culaba – 70.20%; and Cabucgayan – 62.34%.
“With these official figures, I hope LGUs with low performance in the implementation of nutrition program in their respective towns will give more focus this year and onwards on how to improve the nutritional status of their respective town”, Rosales further said.
He further said that giving enough attention to the nutrition program is one way of improving the nutritional status of the area like what Caibiran Mayor Eulalio Maderazo did in his municipality which is known before to have the highest prevalence of malnutrition in the province of Biliran and one of the towns in the entire country with high prevalence of malnutrition several years ago. # (FJ/rvictoria/PIA 8 Biliran)
