NAVAL, Biliran, February 10 (PIA) — Leyte division, covering the largest number of schools in Eastern Visayas, maintains its athletic standing and medal acumulation in the on-going EVRAA (Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association) 2017 games in Biliran province.
As of press time Regional Sports Coordinator Cesar Verunque announced over Radyo Natin – Naval during the kapihan at Pulong-Pulong ng Bayan hosted by PIA-Biliran, as of early this morning, Leyte division earned 16 gold, 15 silver, and 12 bronze; Ormoc City earned 8 gold, 5 silver, and 10 bronze; Baybay City earned 8 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze; Samar earned 6 gold, 0 silver, and 1 bronze; Maasin City earned 5 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze; and Southern Leyte earned 4 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze.
The host division of Biliran earned 3 gold, 0 silver, and 2 bronze; Tacloban City earned 2 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze; Catbalogan City earned 2 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze; Eastern Samar earned 1 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze; Northern Samar earned 1 gold, 0 silver, and 5 bronze; Calbayog City earned 0 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze; and Borongan recorded 0 gold, 0 silver, and 0 bronze.
Mr. Verunque attributed Leyte’s ace performance in the regional athletic competitions in saying “Haluag ang Leyte nga pagpipilian” and the presence of the province’s sports academy.
The regional sports coordinator who also acted as sports manager in the Palarong Pambansa for the past six years said medalists in the individual events will automatically represent the region in the national competitions. Core players of the champion teams and selected competent players during the regional games will compete in the Palarong Pambansa.
Region 8 is a region to watch in the coming Palarong Pambansa to be held in San Jose, Antique from April 23-29 being the champion in the demo sports competition in last year’s national games in Albay, said Verunque.
Last year’s demo sports include billiard, wushu, futsal, and wrestling where Visayan players showed adeptness. These sports are now included in the Palarong Pambansa as regular sports.
This year’s demo sports are pencat silat, aerobics gymnastics, and dance sports.
Eastern Visayas closes it doors to these competitions for its deficiency of human resources. The region is yet to train coaches and trainors for these sports, verunque added. (ajc/FJ/mlt/PIA8-Biliran)
