Palo, Leyte — Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle ordained Rev. Monsignor Rex C. Ramirez as new bishop in solemn rites held at the Palo Metropolitan Cathedral attended by Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, CBCP President and Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, Palo Archbishop John F. Du, Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma, Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio, Naval Bishop Emeritus Filomeno G. Bactol, around 20 archbishops and bishops and around 300 priests from Leyte and Samar.
Bishop Ramirez, a native of Balangiga, Eastern Samar and former parish priest of the Palo Cathedral will be installed on January 12, 2018 at the new bishop of the Diocese of Naval in Naval, Biliran.
Archbishop Du expressed his thanks to Pope Francis as two years after his historic visit to the Archdiocese of Palo, two new priests have been elevated and ordained as bishops.
The first one was Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio, a native of Burauen, Leyte and former rector of the St.John School of Theology in Palo, appointed by Pope Francis as bishop more than year after the papal visit.
Bishop Florencio is now assigned as Cebu auxiliary bishop.
Bishop Ramirez expressed his thanks to Cardinal Tagle being his ordaining prelate.
The venue of his ordination was moved to Palo Cathedral, from Naval, as the road became unpassable when Biliran was devastated by Typhoon Urduja Dec. 16.
Bishop Emeritus Bactol expressed best wishes to Bishop Ramirez, a former student at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Palo. He said he never thought that one day a student will replace him as bishop.
Also present during the ordination were Leyte Third District Rep. Vicente “Ching” S. Veloso, Leyte Governor Leopoldo Petilla and other local officials from Biliran province. – Manila Bulletin
