San Carlos mayor wounded, aide killed in coronation night shooting

By Liway C. Yparraguirre, Correspondent

SAN CARLOS CITY: The mayor was badly wounded and his aide was killed after they were shot Saturday night in the latest violent incident in the run-up to the May 14 elections.

Mayor Julian Resuello was attending the coronation of Miss San Carlos City at the city auditorium when two gunmen fired at him. His civilian aide Jojo Martinez tried to protect Resuello with his body but he too was shot.

Jaime Almonite, a policeman detailed to Resuello, and another Resuello aide, Jonathan de la Cruz, were also hit, along with civilians Alwin Fermin, 29, Paulo Bino, 14 and Reyna Muñoz, 9.

Two others were reported to have been wounded and brought to a hospital here. Their names were not immediately available.

Resuello was first treated at the Blessed Family General Doctors Hospital here. He was flown Sunday morning to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

Vice-Mayor Julier Resuello said his one of his father’s kidneys was removed and his pancreas ruptured.

Mayor Resuello is serving out his last term and is running for vice-mayor His son Julier is a candidate for mayor.

The younger Resuello said he and third district congressional candidate Rachel Arenas were several meters behind Resuello, who was shaking hands with the crowd, when shots rang out.

The Philippine National Police chief, Director General Oscar Calderon, arrived in San Carlos minutes after Resuello was airlifted to Manila.

“I would not say I would include San Carlos on the list of areas of concern, but that will depend on the recommendation of the regional director,” he said.

Vice-Mayor Resuello refused to speculate on who was behind the attempt to kill his father.

“Let’s leave it to the police,” he said.

The attack on Resuello came less than a week after a bloody encounter between supporters of two political kingpins in Jaen, Nueva Ecija, which killed two people and wounded 12 others.

In Morong, Bataan, the mayor, Norberto Linao Jr. reportedly escaped being killed after someone took a shot at him through his bedroom window Sunday morning.

Linao said he dived to the floor after hearing the single gunshot. “The gunman must have thought he hit me,” he said.

Linao said that before the gunshot, he heard the roar of a motorcycle coming from an alley behind his house. He theorized there were two suspects, the gunman and a lookout.

Provincial intelligence officers led by Senior Police Officer 1 Danilo Nazareno recovered an empty .45-caliber shell near the window.

Insp. Ferdinand Aguilar, Morong police chief, said a slug of still undetermined caliber was found in the mayor’s bedroom.

Linao also pointed to a cut in the window’s screen. Just outside the window was a plastic chair where the gunman probably stood to fire his shot. Another chair was found at the corner of the wall that the gunman scaled.

Linao is on his final term as mayor and his younger sister, Dr. Cynthia Estanislao Linao, is running in his stead. Her opponent is former Mayor Catalino Calimbas.

Money, love for money! Money is like a bone that dogs want to eat each other for the
sake of it. There is lot of money in the position. Stolen money that ultimately are charged
against the sweat and tears of the citizens.
