A congressman, Representa-thief Ronald Singson was arrested by custom officers in Hongkong's international airport and later was charged with carrying a vial of about 26 grams of cocaine in his luggage. Gov. Chavit Singson, the father said his son would not plead guilty to drug trafficking but to the "lesser" offense of cocaine possesion. It could be remembered that the congressman's lawyer told Hongkong courts last December that he, Rep Singson would admit drug trafficking when the hearing resumes come January 26.

But the House of representa-thieves' leadership is showing the same insensitivity, the same naked arrogance of power. House Mahjong-rity leader Representa-thief Gonzales II said a guilty plea - even to drug trafficking charges - does not mean automatic expulsion from the House of Representa-thieves! Haller! What all this means is that our lawmakers are usually the first to protect the law-breakers among themselves.

A classic one: law makers, law breakers!

Congress should have expelled Ronald Singson way back last year. I wonder what does Congress is waiting for? Can Congress breathe a sigh of relief that one of its own is just a user and not a seller of cocaine? Does being a user of cocaine makes him all right to stay in Congress? Is it perfectly fine that we have a cocaine user contemplating the kinds of laws we are governed by?

The point is that public officials may not remain public officials when even the slightest whiff of scandal, let alone a crime, attaches to their person. A public office is a public trust. A public official may not claim, or cling to office on the ground that he has not been proven guilty. A claim to public office is based on the possession of the highest virtues, not on the possession of the lowliest right, the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. A claim to public office is not based on the possession of cocaine!
