OLD NAMES, NEW NAMES
. The territory of Naval was originally known as "Nasombol" (Nasumbul, if we consider phonetics; lit., "was a sumbul - a symbol of a great victory or conquest"). The known old name, "Bagasumbul," was apparently coined as temporary label for the unified Bagombong and Nasombol, two visitas of Biliran pueblo which leaders petitioned the Spanish colonial government in 1857 to form a new pueblo separate from the womb. The submitted petition proposed that, when approved, the pueblo would be named Naval. The Bagombong side would evolve to later become the pueblo of Almeria around 1886. -- Prof. Rolando O. Borrinaga
