Mount Panamao

When Biliran was still called Isla de Panamao around the 1670s, during the wake of the devastating eruption of Mt. Panamao around 1669, it became the site of the first large-scale cacao plantation in the Philippines, with seedlings imported from Mexico. Yes, the Spanish galleons and cacao of our local legend and folklore both had a historical basis. Perhaps it is high time for Biliran to take strong initiative to again pursue cacao cultivation in the wake of the projected global shortage of this product. - Prof. Rolando Borrinaga
