Court orders arrest of lawmaker’s cousin

NAVAL, Biliran—The Naval Regional Trial Court ordered the arrest of a first cousin of incumbent Rep. Glenn Chong for his alleged involvement in two cases of rape.

Judge Pepe Domael of Branch 16 ordered the Naval police chief, National Bureau of Investigation and the police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to arrest Paul Chong, a resident of Castin Street in Naval in connection of two cases of rape filed by a cell phone saleslady.

Domael denied bail for Chong, who is a student at the Naval Institute of Technology.

The alleged rape happened last May 24, a few days after the congressman was proclaimed winner in the contest for the sole congressional seat of Biliran against Gerry Espina.

The victim who is a native of Tacloban City and working as a sales clerk in a cell phone store in Naval claimed that about midnight of May 24, Chong forcibly had sex with her at the hotel owned by the Chong family.

The victim, who claimed to have received numerous threats, is now under the custody of the provincial office of the Department of Social Welfare Development here. Ben M. Veridiano
