Mythical Panamao
Transcription of Myth: “The Biliran province was named Isla de Panamao, Punta Bulalacao. While “Panamao” refers to a local fishing net, it also refers to the highest mountain peak in the province. Natives of the island regard the mountain as mystical, mysterious, and enchanting. Various stories and accounts of personal encounters with unseen divinities usually involve the so-called “sanctuary of deities” (Mt. Panamao). One popular story I’ve heard of was about “Benita” who was thought to be a goddess living in Mt. Panamao.
Some people say that long ago, Benita usually goes to Manila to transport fruits like cacao, mango, and others. She then boards her own ship going back home and docks at Pintado (a pier) in Brgy. Bulalacao, Kawayan, Biliran which is thought to serve as a passage towards the mountain of Panamao. For once, a vendor from Manila came to visit the island to look for Benita who personally told her where her province was. Upon arrival, the woman vendor straightly went to Brgy. Bulalacao (though some say it was somewhere else in Biliran) to look for the house of Benita because it has been a long time already when the latter had not delivered her the fruits she ordered. She related that Benita told her she lives in Panamao, so when she arrived at the barrio she asked some people where Panamao is. She was stunned when she was directed to the point of the mountain. When asked to describe about the lady she looks for, she said that Benita resembles the face of a goddess with long silk-flowing hair and white long dress. And so rumors spread around and speculations were borne out that Benita was not a mortal but a diwata who resides in the depths of Mt. Panamao. According to the vendor one reason that also prompted her to visit Biliran was her interest of Benita’s beautiful story about the place.
