NAVAL, Biliran, (BDEO) – Defects have been noted on the bridge components of the Biliran Bridge and major repair or rehabilitation of these components are recommended, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways-Biliran District Engineering Office’s (DPWH-BDEO) condition inspection which was conducted at the bridge on Saturday, December 24, 2024 together with the personnel of the Planning and Design Division of DPWH Regional Office 8.
Citing from the results of the inspection report provided by DPWH BDEO, the technical engineers who have conducted the inspection have noted defective bridge components under the deck slab particularly on bridge stringers, steel cross bracing, built up sections on span 4 and loose nuts and bolts on the same span.
Among the factors that could have caused the wavelike pattern/ aero-dynamic flutter is the gustiness frequency of the wind approaches or is in resonance to the combined forces that impacted the bridge (moving loads, wind load and own weight of the bridge).
DPWH BDEO OIC- District Engineer (DE) Irwin Antonio explained that this effect is associated by the reduced stiffness of the bridge due to the age and corroded members of the steel bridge caused by sea breeze. The report also stated that the bearing plates are in fair condition despite the discovered defects.
Nevertheless, OIC-DE Antonio assured the public for swift actions and stated that the office will be proposing a project for the repair of the bridge considering that this is the sole link between the islands of Leyte and Biliran.
“The Biliran Bridge is a vital and one of the most significant structures in the region, which is why our office has noted that a major repair of these defective components is highly recommended, in order to address this matter with utmost urgency.”, said DE Antonio.
Meanwhile, DPWH BDEO continues to temporarily restrict heavy vehicles from crossing the bridge to ensure safety of the public. Only vehicles with a weight of 5 tons are allowed to pass the bridge one at a time and advised to cross thru the center.
To accommodate the high volume of cargo trucks conveying essential goods, perishable items, and fuel tankers transporting in and out of the island province, the use of barge transportation is advised. Currently, the provincial and local governments of Biliran are working closely with DPWH-BDEO to expedite the implementation of this recommended solution.
“Rest assured that we are doing our best to ensure the public’s safety. It is our humble call to the public to cooperate with these measures and we hope for your kind understanding for any inconvenience this situation has brought”, said DE Antonio.
