NAVAL, BILIRAN (October 13) – Two local radio block-time commentators here were ordered jailed today at the Naval municipal jail for indirect contempt issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 16 judge Rogelio Joboco.
Jerome Arcenal and Jorge Manco were each meted a sentence of 10-day imprisonment plus P10,000 fine for their insinuation broadcasted September 12 over Radyo Natin-Naval that Joboco has shown bias against a policeman charged for the ambush of businessman Charles Chong, father of Biliran representative Glenn Chong.
Joboco heard earlier that day a motion filed by SPO2 Renato Saul of the Biliran Police provincial office for him to be allowed to post bail while investigations were ongoing in the June 7 incident that resulted in the death of the elder Chong’s trusted aide, Alberto Parilla, and representative Chong’s security escort, Antonio Barcelo.
The ambush also incapacitated another Chong security staff, retired police officer Jose Casas, who was hit in the knee.
Right after the incident Arcenal and Manco, who months back had acquired block time over the local radio station purposely to criticize the young legislator, parroted allegations that the ambush was staged by the Chong family and strongly defended former congressman Gerardo Espina Sr. who now stands charged as the mastermind of the fateful event.
Two teenaged witnesses have surfaced to testify that the perpetrators of the gruesome killing went to see Espina Sr. a few hours after the incident at the home of the former congressman and reported that they were nearly hit back by returned fire.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that another Chong escort, retired policeman Rodel Bareja, was able to draw his pistol and fire back at the perpetrators who had commandeered one of Chong’s vehicles to get away from the scene.
Arcenal and Manco are reportedly paid minions of the Espina family. Their radio program aired over MBC’s Radyo Natin network in Biliran has shown partiality against representative Glenn Chong and tends to besmirch his name and downplay his accomplishments.
The two are said to have further shunned radio broadcast codes and ethics by ignoring apparent facts that are bound to damage the name of their reported benefactor and maliciously malign everyone who go against their pronouncements.
Aside from this present citation, Arcenal and Manco are facing two counts of indirect contempt for similar actuations against RTC judge Joboco on two other separate dates.
The latest incident on September 22 where Arcenal and Manco insinuated that Joboco is ignorant of the law and where they threatened that he will be remorseful throughout his life if he will proceed to hear the case, will be called for hearing on October 24.
