Matag-ob, Leyte— A farmer who was carrying gathered firewood was suspected to have died from heat stroke about 4:00 in the afternoon on Monday, February 19, in Sitio Tagaytay, Brgy. Candelaria of this municipality.

Matag-ob COP Police Major Ted Dennis O. Clemencio identified the victim as Rogelio Sompino y Sumogat, 66, with common-law wife, farmer, and a resident of Sitio Tagaytay, Brgy. Candelaria here.

The police said that a cellular phone call from a concerned citizen called their station about 4: 30 in the afternoon and informed them about the recovery of a dead body in the grassy portion of the said place. The police immediately responded to the area to verify the veracity of the report and to conduct an investigation. Upon arrival in the area they found the lifeless body of the victim slumping at the grasses in the area lifeless.

Investigation conducted by the local police disclosed that the victim was last seen going to the upper portion of the barangay to gather fireworks. A neighbor told police that the victim was seen carrying on his head the gathered wood under the heat of the sun and suddenly fell to the ground. The neighbor immediately informed their barangay officials who later reported the matter to the police.

The local rescue group immediately brought the lifeless body of the victim to the Rural Health Unit where Dra. Yvon S. Ragasa, Municipal Health Officer of this municipality who conducted a post mortem found no foul play in the death of the victim and concluded that the cause of death is cardiac arrest due to heat.
