Tacloban City (January 6) – Two members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group who are suspects in the June 7, 2008 ambush in Naval, Biliran, are now under the custody of the Philippine National Police CIDG in Region 8.
Police Chief Inspector Bernard Latoja Lao, the CIDG Region Deputy informed the Philippine Information Agency that on January 3, 2010, the two suspects identified as PO3 Jovito Cabillan and PO3 Charlie Ando, voluntarily surrendered to the said office to where they are assigned.
This brings to three the number of suspects in the Naval ambush which are now under the custody of the Philippine National Police. The other suspect, SPO1 Reynato Saul is currently being detained at the Biliran Provincial Jail.
Major Lao said that the two suspects expressed willingness to face the charges against them. However, through their lawyer, they have petitioned the Court that they be detained at the CIDG Regional Office.
One of the suspects, PO3 Ando who has been serving the PNP for 22 years already, disclosed that he fears that his life and that of PO3 Cabillan, will be in great danger in case the court will order their transfer to the detention cell in Naval.
He added that he and his co-suspects are looking into the possibility of appealing for bail especially if the evidences against them are weak.
On the part of the CIDG in Region 8, Major Lao said that the office will wait for the decision of the Court. If the Court so decide that the suspects be transferred to the Court of Origin, then they cannot do anything but abide by the decision.
Earlier, cases of double murder, frustrated murder and grave threats were filed by Charles Chong, father of Biliran Congressman Glen Chong, against the suspects together with former Biliran Representative Gerardo “Jerr” Espina who was tagged as the mastermind in the ambush and shooting incident on June 7, 2008 in Naval, Biliran.
In the said incident, Alberto Parilla and Antonio Barcelo died while Jose Casas sustained injuries, while Charlie Chong escaped unscathed as he was covered by the victims. The three were security officers of Representative Chong. (PIA 8)
